Damaged veins can cause a number of chronic conditions. This is known as chronic venous disease. Examples of conditions and/or problems associated with chronic venous disease include:

Venous disease occurs when valves within the vein become damaged and no longer open and close properly. This impairs blood flow to the heart and causes the blood to pool in the legs. Varicose veins are one of the most common problems associated with venous disease. Symptoms of varicose veins include:
- Darkening and/or swelling of the legs
- Pain
- Leg numbness or heaviness
