Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a common, simple treatment for both varicose and spider veins. The first reported sclerotherapy treatment dates as far back as the 1830s.

Sclerotherapy involves injections which are placed directly into the diseased vein(s). This ultimately causes the vein(s) to shrink. Over time, the vein(s) shrink to the point where they are unable to be seen.

The procedure itself does not require any anesthesia. We start by cleaning the affected area then inserting a small needle into the vein. Most patients report that they feel a small pinch when the needle is inserted, but no pain. Once the needle is inserted, the solution is injected into the vein. This may result in minor tingling or burning. We then gently massage the area where the solution was injected. This helps prevent blood from entering the vein.

Depending on the type of and number of veins being treated, we may apply a small dressing over the area. You also may need to wear compression stockings for a brief period of time. Some patients require multiple treatments,

Recovery for sclerotherapy is quick and you will be able to resume normal activities within 24 hours.
