Your circulatory system relies on a complex network of deep veins to pump blood from your lower extremities back up toward your heart and lungs. When blood pools, slows down, or thickens due to immobility or lifestyle changes, it can clump together to form a semi-solid mass or thrombus.
The primary reason medical professionals evaluate a DVT closely is a complication called a pulmonary embolism (PE). If a piece of a blood clot breaks free from the leg vein, it can travel through the bloodstream and lodge itself in the arteries of the lungs.
